What the service is

MercyNight organises whose turn it is, collects song wishes and lets a group vote. The music itself comes from YouTube and is played by YouTube’s embedded player on the device you choose.

The service is free, and it stays free: there is nothing to buy, nothing to subscribe to, and playback is never behind a payment.

Open source, and the limits that come with free

The app and its server are open source under the MIT licence. We run one hosted server for everyone, and anyone can run their own instead.

That server searches YouTube on Google’s free daily quota, which every session shares: on the order of a hundred searches a day for all parties together. When it is used up, searching pauses until the next day — pasting a YouTube link keeps working, songs other parties already picked are still found, and a host can put in their own YouTube key.

We run this as a side project, not as a business. There is no support promise and no uptime promise.

Your part

MercyNight is meant for private groups. If you play music where a public performance licence is required, that licence is your responsibility, as it would be with any other player.

Using the app you also accept YouTube’s Terms of Service, which apply to the playback itself.

Chat messages and display names are yours. Do not put anything into them that is illegal or that you would not want on a screen in front of the room; the host can remove messages and participants.

What we do not promise

The service is offered as it is. Sessions, songs and points can be lost, YouTube can make videos unavailable, and searching depends on a daily quota Google grants us.

We can change or discontinue the service. Nothing here limits liability for intent, gross negligence, or injury to life, body or health.
